The time has come! You’ve spent months planning, dreaming and paying for this moment. Your wedding day is fast approaching. And to top it off, you are getting married in a breathtaking destination location.
As you begin to sort through the things you need for your trip, we wanted to remind you of these 7 important items to keep in mind when heading to your destination wedding.
1 - Carry your dress on with you
When flying to your wedding location it is SO important that you carry your dress (and ALL wedding clothing) on the plane with you. We have heard far too many horror stories of luggage containing wedding clothing being lost or destroyed by the airline.
The bride, groom, and wedding party, should carry ALL wedding clothing, jewelry and shoes on the aircraft with them. Garment bags (once folded) are typically within the carry on size limits and should fit in the over head bin (please double check the actual demotions with your airline).
Also consider paying a fee to board early (if applicable) to ensure that you get a good selection of overhead bin space.
2 - Plan for wardrobe malfunctions or mishaps
In a perfect world your dress won’t have a wrinkle and a groomsman’s suit won’t have a spot; but it happens. So in case it happens to you be prepared. Before you depart make sure you find out where you can get your wedding clothes steamed or pressed if needed. You may also want to consider packing a small handheld steamer.
As a back up measure also identify what laundering options are near you in case you have to get something cleaned unexpectedly.
3- Get organized & confirm the details
Being organized is the KEY to a successful destination wedding. A well organized list will be your friend as your prepare for take off. Be sure to triple check your lists and make sure you have everything you need prior to your departure. Create a brief to do list of things that you need to complete once you arrive. And don’t forget your wedding kit (tide white out stick, needle and thread, medicine, bandaids, feminine products, etc).
Keep in contact with your hotel and/or venue on you arrival times and scheduled rehearsal times. Confirm all details regarding your wedding and follow up with any questions you may have.
4- Give your bridal party specific instructions
Communicate. Communicate. Communicate. Ensure your bridal party has a detailed overview of all your expectations prior to your wedding weekend. Remind them of any spa appointments, group meals/activities, and bachelor/ bachelorette events. Double check they have all clothing, documents and any special items needed for the weekend.
Consider making a small weekend wedding itinerary for your bridal party so they have all important details in one place.
5- Verify marriage license requirements
Make sure you research what documents are required for you to obtain a legal marriage license from the state or country you will be in. We suggest you carry these items on as well.
6- Plan for unexpected expenses
Always plan for the unexpected. Its always a good idea to bring a little extra money for any unexpected expenses that could arise. Also plan to tip your service providers (some resorts/hotels/venues add gratuity into their service charge).
7- Be flexible and respect the land
If you are heading to an island or international destination be mindful of the culture. Some cultures may be more punctual than others. It would be beneficial to know basic information about the land you are traveling to. Look at travel tips specific to that destination. Enjoy the beautiful land that you will be saying your vows on. Honor it, and it will honor you.
Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! We wish you and your fiancé all the love, joy, and happiest ever after!
